Researchers are learning some of the root causes of brain decline. And some of it is our own brains going haywire. Sometimes we do things to make it go haywire.
Research from the Princeton Neuroscience Institute at Princeton University has been trying to find the link between obesity and cognitive decline. (The CDC states that one-third of Americans are obese). Microglia are “the brain’s resident immune cells”. The research team learned that obesity can cause the microglia to go rogue and begin destroying synapses through eating dendritic spines. (Dendritic spines receive signals from other cells; long healthy dendritic spines are highly desirable. We don’t want microglia to eat them).
More on that research, led by post-doctoral researcher Elise C. Cope, PhD, here.
Today’s brain health lesson- if you are at your ideal weight, stay there. If not get there. You know who sells cool, cheap exercise kits? We do.
